German Now from Leipzig

Since 1990s, the German contemporary art has internationally owned a big success. The phrase “Young German Artists” reflects this growth of German art well. There are the representing artists of German contemporary art such as Gerhard Richter, Georg Baselitz, Jörg Immendorf, Amselm Kiefer, and Neo Rauch, and the values of their art pieces are increasing by 20-25% every year. In 2006, out of 2636 exhibitions held worldwide, 25% of them were held in Germany. Also, 1/3 of 50 frequently participating galleries of the main art fairs have their head galleries in Germany. As can be seen from these facts, many artists are focusing on Germany where artistic exchanges are actively being carried out.

German art shows aspects of development based on traditional shape paintings. Particularly in 1990s, after its reunion, the hidden East German art was unveiled. In the center, the flow revolves around Leipzig school, the school composed by artists from Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig with Neo Rauch in the lead. Therefore, based on current trends in German art, [GERMAN NOW]exhibition is focusing on Leipzig school, the lead of 21 Century German contemporary Art.



현재 독일의 현대 미술과 사진 작품들은 1990년대 이후 국제적인 성공을 거두고 있다. 세계적으로 알려지고 있는 ‘Young German Artist’라는 표현은 독일 미술의 이러한 성장을 잘 반영한다. 독일 현대 미술을 대표하는 작가들로는 게르하르트 리히터(Gerhard Richter), 게오르그 바젤리츠(Georg Baselitz), 외르크 임멘도르프(Jörg Immendorf), 안젤름 키퍼(Amselm Kiefer), 네오 라우흐(Neo Rauch)등이 있는데 이러한 독일 작가들의 작품 가격은 매년 20~25% 증가하고 있다. 또한 독일은 전 세계에서 열리는 예술전시회 중 25%가량을 개최하고 있으며, 국제 예술 박람회에 주로 참가하는 50개의 갤러리 중 1/3은 독일에 본점을 소유하고 있다. 이러한 사실에서도 알 수 있듯이 현재 독일에는 많은 예술가들의 발걸음이 집중되고 있으며 세계 각국의 미술 교류가 활발히 진행되고 있는 추세이다.

독일현대미술의 가장 큰 특징은 전통적인 형상회화를 토대로 전개된다는 것인데, 통일이 된 90년대 이후에는 분단으로 인해 베일에 가려져있었던 구동독 미술이 봉인 해제되면서 네오라우흐가 이끄는 라이프치히 시각예술대학(Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig) 출신들로 이루어진 라이프치히 화파(Leipzig School)를 주축으로 그 흐름이 전개되고 있다. 따라서 현재 독일 미술의 동향을 바탕으로 구성된 [GERMAN NOW]에서는21세기 독일 컨템포러리 아트의 흐름을 이끄는 중심축인 라이프치히 화파를 집중적으로 다룬다.
