About

In April 2026, UNC Gallery presents Floating Between, the second solo exhibition in Korea by Austrian artist Robert Muntean. Following his first solo exhibition Closer in 2024, where he explored the relationship between music and visual form by transforming emotional textures into images, this exhibition unfolds a new relational landscape shaped by the complex and interwoven layers of time and existence.

Muntean’s paintings resist a linear understanding of time. The past does not completely disappear, the present is never fixed, and memory functions not simply as recollection but as an active force that reshapes scenes in the present moment. Forms that linger momentarily on the canvas are felt as subtle vibrations—delicate tremors created where different relationships meet and intersect. These moments do not settle into a single point; instead, they drift between memories and emotions, quietly inhabiting the surface of the canvas.

“My paintings seek to capture the fleeting, liminal moments where time is not linear but reverberates as echo, reflection, and impression.” — Robert Muntean

The nonlinear experience of time that Muntean captures appears clearly before us, yet it flows with a dreamlike quality. Within a single scene, the resonance of the past and a premonition of the future can be sensed at the same time. Familiar landscapes begin to feel strange, while unfamiliar scenes approach us like distant memories.

As the twentieth-century French philosopher Gaston Bachelard once wrote, “The poetic image is a sudden salience on the surface of the psyche.” Artistic images, therefore, are not merely visual perceptions but poetic moments, flashes of light that stir memory, emotion, and the sense of temporal layers. In Muntean’s paintings, moments appear before our eyes only to gradually dissolve, continuing to resonate within memory and emotion. The fleeting scenes captured on his canvases echo like deep reverberations rising from the depths of the mind, allowing us to sense a multilayered state in which different times and spaces, experiences and relationships overlap.

Ultimately, Muntean’s work quietly reveals that “existence” and “time” are not fixed coordinates. Past and present are not separated but sensed together, like different temporal layers overlapping within a single space, and as a circle whose beginning and end cannot be distinguished. The encounters within the artist’s paintings do not follow a straight path but unfold within a structure of layered coexistence. His works delicately reveal invisible networks of time and the waves of relationships, forming scenes in which form and atmosphere, the figurative and the abstract, dissolve into one another. What emerges is not conflict but dissolution, not rupture but a subtle state of coexistence.

Expanding on the tension of “relations” explored in his previous exhibition—the interplay between beauty and pain—Muntean now extends this inquiry into the layered dimensions of time and being. It is a condition in which beings remain close yet cannot fully merge; separated yet already part of one another. The blurs and empty spaces across the canvas are not signs of absence but relational spaces of potential, while figures and backgrounds are not divided but connected like a single breath. The beings that appear in his works are not fixed entities but forms that briefly emerge within relationality.

In one of the works presented in the exhibition, Floating, two figures intertwine and overlap like a single mass. Suspended in a weightless state where time and space seem momentarily paused, they move as if flowing together as one form. Their contours remain undefined, while color seeps across the surface, dissolving the boundary between skin and background. The painting evokes layered flows of time and fragments of reminiscence, conveying a quiet resonance filled with poetic landscapes and deepening emotional density projected from within the viewer.

We may believe we are witnessing a single scene or event, yet we may already be passing through multiple layers of time. The form we encounter now belongs to the present, but it is also a remembered image and perhaps an anticipation of emotions yet to come. The boundaries of time and relation do not collapse abruptly; instead, they drift through one another slowly, almost imperceptibly.

Floating Betweenreveals moments in which the boundary between abstraction and figuration dissolves within what the artist describes as colors “like the sunlight of a very late afternoon”—quiet, gentle, and luminous. Muntean’s poetic images, like the afterimage of a horse running through mist, do not completely fade. Where time and existence remain unfixed, where past, present, and future intersect and resonate, the moment is not merely something that passes. It lingers and continues to echo within us. Nothing truly vanishes; it simply folds into another layer, only to return to us.

Within psychological landscapes where isolation and solidarity, emotional ambiguity, emptiness, and lyricism intermingle, Muntean’s work captures the moment when everything floats between boundaries. It tells us that every passing moment of life is where layers of time, memory, and premonition resonate together—where times unfold toward one another.
