The Blue Hour of Dreams

For Gideon Kiefer, art holds great importance more than anything else. Art is not bound to an act of expression, and it expands to pursue a new life through his newly discovered ego. Like an old saying, “Even a worm will turn,” in a threatening moment we rely on our instinct for survival. While it is hard to make rational decision, Kiefer chooses art. He expresses a feeling of desperation directly as a form of art. His unconscious thoughts are instinctually poured out, which can be read as the artist’s instinctual ‘projection’ in front of desperate moment. The act of tearing a book and placing a new image on its book cover as well illustrates Kiefer in purely instinctual state and indicates a metaphorical expression about his new beginning. By removing an existing purpose and content of a book and providing a new identity, his distinct work expresses new life.

Kiefer’s works feature a very distinct atmosphere we’ve never encountered before. How was he able to achieve such a distinguished sense of vision and expression? He newly discovers another part of himself by confronting a limit, death. He projects energy through art and continuously faces his limitation to expand potential. As an immeasurable source of energy, countless memories and thoughts in his head make him shine bright. Personal experiences and inner feelings in response to his experiences are combined to make Kiefer as a unique and distinct individual.

No one has returned from death. However, there are some, like Kiefer, who have stepped very close to death. We do not know death because we have never encountered one who experienced death. Kiefer and his works serve as a mediator between life and death. He explains the feeling of desperation and anxiety from the moment of death into our visual language, and through this we could get a sense of an end of life, destruction. As a shadow of death approaches him, Kiefer instinctually chooses art, and this indicates how much influence art holds in his life. For Kiefer, art is more than a mere act of expression but also a new pioneering factor of his life. As one approaches an end of life, his works talk about the immeasurable influence and possibility art grants to his life. Through this exclusive showcase of Gideon Kiefer’s works at UNC Gallery, we hope to provide an opportunity for audience to think beyond an essence of art.

기드온 키퍼에게 예술은 그 무엇보다도 소중하고 큰 의미가 있는 존재이다. 예술은 단순히 표현의 행위에 그치지 않으며, 그의 내면 속에 있는 또 다른 자아의 욕구를 통해 새로운 인생을 추구하는 역할을 한다. 지렁이도 밟으면 꿈틀한다는 말처럼, 생명을 위협받는 상황에서 대개 우리는 본능에 몸을 맡긴다. 이성적인 사고와 판단이 이루어지기 힘든 이 때, 키퍼는 예술을 택하였다. 자신의 절박한 몸부림을 그대로 예술로 표현한다. 작품에는 그의 무의식 속 기억과 생각들이 본능에 따라 자연스럽게 쏟아져 나오는데, 이것은 절박한 상황 앞에서 작가의 본능적 모습의 ‘표출’로 해석할 수 있다. 책의 내용물을 뜯어내 표지 위에 새로이 그림을 그리는 행동 역시 키퍼 자신이 처한 상황에서의 순수한 본능적 모습을 나타내며 새로운 시작에 대한 비유적 표현인 듯 하다. 본래 책의 목적과 내용을 제거하고 새로운 정체성을 부여함으로써 그의 독특한 작품 속 새로운 인생을 표현한다.

그의 작품에서는 어디에서도 경험하지 못한 특유의 분위기가 풍긴다. 키퍼는 어떻게 해서 그 누구보다 독특하고 차별화된 시각과 표현력을 갖게 된 걸까? 우리가 경험해보지 못한 죽음이라는 한계에 부딪히면서 그는 미처 알지 못했던 자신의 새로운 면모를 경험한다. 예술을 통해 자신의 에너지를 방출하며 끊임없이 자기 자신의 한계에 저항하며 가능성을 확장시켜나간다. 그의 머릿속 수많은 기억과 생각들이 가늠할 수 없는 에너지의 원천으로써 그를 가장 빛나게 밝혀준다. 자신이 겪어온 경험과 이에 대한 그의 내면의 감정과 생각들이 합쳐져 그를 지속해서 성장해나가는 유일무이한 존재로 만드는 것이다.

이 세상에 죽음을 경험하고 돌아온 사람은 없다. 하지만, 키퍼와 같이 죽음의 문턱까지 다녀온 이들은 많다. 우리는 죽음을 접한 사람을 만난 적이 없기에 죽음에 대해 잘 알지 못한다. 이에 키퍼와 그의 작품은 죽음과 삶 사이 중재자 역할을 한다. 죽음에 다다랐을 때의 그가 경험한 절박함과 두려움을 살아있는 우리의 시각적 언어로 재해석하여 설명해주며 이를 통하여 우리는 곧 언제 다가올 지 모르는 삶의 끝, 파멸에 대해 인지할 수 있다. 죽음의 그림자가 그의 삶에 드리웠을 때 키퍼는 본능적으로 예술을 택하였고, 이를 통해 예술이 그에게 얼마나 큰 영향력을 선사하는 존재인지 가늠할 수 있다. 키퍼에게 예술은 단순한 표현의 행위를 넘어서 그의 인생의 새로운 개척 요소인 것이다. 기드온 키퍼의 작품은 언젠가 다가올 인생의 마침표를 앞에 두고 예술이 자신의 인생에게 선사하는 가늠할 수 없는 영향력과 가능성에 대해 이야기한다. 이번 UNC 갤러리에서 독점적으로 선보이는 키퍼의 작품들을 통하여 우리가 알고 있는 예술의 본질적 가치 그 이상에 대해 생각해보는 계기를 마련하고자 한다.
